Review teaching of English

Education D-G directed to carry out review on the learning of the language in school
SEGAMAT: Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has ordered the English Language Curriculum Division to have a relook at the learning of the language in schools to ensure students can master it as a second language.
Muhyiddin, who is also Education Minister, said he had directed Education director-general Datuk Abdul Ghafar Mahmud to carry out a review on the learning of English Language in school.
“How the national education system involving 13 years, with five years of secondary school, is still unable to provide our students with a good grasp of the English Language, I, myself, am incapable of answering,” he said in his speech during a visit to SMK Felda Maokil, Labis here yesterday.
Muhyiddin said the review might determine if the weakness was due to a shortage of English Language teachers, equipment or due to other causes.
He said mastery of the English Language was important because it was the main language in international communication and the economy.
He also rejected the perception that implementing the ‘Uphold Bahasa Melayu, Strengthen the English Language’ policy had resulted in the Education Ministry neglecting the English Language.
Muhyiddin also said the ministry had carried out a comprehensive survey of the nation’s educational infrastructure, in its effort to provide the infrastructural need of schools.
He said, although his ministry had received a development allocation of between RM5 billion and RM6 billion, the amount was not enough because of the large number of schools in the country and the rapid population growth which required the constructions of new schools.

COURAGEOUS: The camp instructor, who collapsed at the end of the ordeal,
about to be sent to the hospital after being brought out of the jungle.

SANTUBONG: Two teenagers and a camp instructor are in serious condition after a swarm of bees  attacked a group of young jungle trekkers near Damai beach here yesterday.
The teens were part of a 22-member group, including two teachers, from a private school taking part in a three-day excursion which began on Friday.
The incident occurred around 10.15am near a waterfall where the group had stopped to prepare lunch following a trek through a jungle trail.
One student said later he believed the smoke from their cooking fire had disturbed a bee hive somewhere above them and resulted in hundreds of bees descending on them.
Two members of the group ended up in serious condition with countless stings all over their bodies, while others sustained several bee stings.
The camp instructor also bore the brunt of the bees’ attack when he courageously put himself in harm’s way by going back and forth to rescue the students and lead them to safety.
He collapsed at the end of the ordeal and had to be carried out by rescue personnel, which included firemen, a Civil Defence Department team and two ambulance crews from the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH).
All were rushed to the SGH where the two students and the instructor were hospitalised in the Red Zone, while the others were sent to the Yellow Zone for treatment.

KOTA KINABALU: Twenty students from SMK Nabawan were excited and happy when they flew in an aircraft for the first time from Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan on July 21 which was made possible by MASwings through its Wings of Love aspiration.
These aspiring librarian students accompanied by four teachers led by their consulting teacher for SMK Nabawan Library Club, Kelvin Kong, left via MH3093 at 7.45am on their first ever field trip by flight to visit the Sandakan District Library.
SMK Nabawan is a school located in a rural area with almost an hour travelling time from Keningau town. Most of the students’ parents are local Muruts and working as paddy farmers.
“MASwings which has embarked on its very own community project called ‘Wings of Love’ under its corporate social responsibility programme focusing on community, education and environment, is more than happy to sponsor this group’s return ticket travel after learning the intent and objective of the field trip initiated by the teachers on their own effort to reward these students,” said Shauqi Ahmad, MASwings Regional Vice President Sabah.
MASwings took note and appreciated the fact that despite the hardship of the students’ parents, the teachers of the Library Club would hold a field trip for the students every year hoping to expose them to other places besides their own small village. The teachers believe it would motivate the students to strive for, if not excel, a better life for themselves and their family in the near future.
Previously the Library Club visited the Keningau and Tenom District Libraries and last year they went further to the Sabah State and UMS Libraries.
This year their field trip of three days and two nights which covered a visit to Sandakan Library, SMK Elopura, Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre and Sandakan Crocodile Farm, became a reality, thanks to MASwings’ Wings of Love.
“MASwings will continue to be firmly committed to meaningful initiatives under its Wings of Love project through various methods by investing in the educational future of students, especially those underprivileged and hail from remote areas within Sabah and Sarawak. We hope by the use of our resources and contribution, it will bring about positive changes in the community and the country as a whole,” Shauqi added.
